* If you're looking for a year-round vehicle that rides and handles like a car, but can venture off-road and pack in all manner of gear, people and wet dogs, the 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek will probably fit you like a Gore-Tex girdle. Source: KBB.com

* The 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek is an exhilarating alternative to the compact SUVs you are used to seeing. It features a dynamic and aggressive design, with aerodynamic lines, prominent over-fenders, gorgeous wheels, and hawk-eye headlights. Uneven terrain is a breeze with the Crosstrek since it has 8.7 inches of ground clearance complimented by rugged plastic cladding on the lower body panels. Plus, its maximum cargo volume of 51.9 cubic feet gives you plenty of space for your gear. It is offered in two trims: the 2.0i Premium and the 2.0i Limited, and both share a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder, SUBARU BOXER engine with 148 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. The Premium comes standard with a 5-Speed manual transmission. However, as an option you can get it with the Lineartronic Continuously Variable Transmission, which is the standard on the Limited. The Lineartronic CVT allows the Crosstrek to get an EPA estimated 25 MPG City and 33 MPG Highway, and it has a manual mode where you can use the paddle shifters for exciting precision driving. Both trims come standard with the incredible Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. The athletic grip of the XV Crosstrek makes taking corners exciting, and it has responsive handling that keeps your drives enjoyable and fun. Inside, you will experience a spacious and modern cabin, and sit in comfort on adjustable, heated front seats. Both models give you a tilt/telescopic steering wheel with integrated controls for music, Bluetooth, and cruise control. The Premium model comes with a 6-Speaker audio system that includes a CD player, auxiliary jack, USB port, iPod control, hands-free phone connectivity, and Bluetooth audio streaming from compatible phones. The Limited adds HD Radio, 4.3-inch screen, and a rear-vision camera. In addition, the Voice-Activated GPS Navigation system with 6.1-inch touchscreen is an option for both trims. New for 2014, if you opt for the navigation system it now has Aha-based integration with your smartphone. Source: The Manufacturer Summary

  • Reliable and Capable, but lacking in Technology

The good: - Subaru Reliability, no problems at all over 40K miles. - Wonder control in poor weather thanks to the AWD. - Steering has never gone out of alignment. - Tire wear very even, still on original equipment. The acceptable: - Real world fuel economy is close to the sticker. I do mostly highway driving with approximately 26 mpg. - Interior space is good. I am 60 and I have no trouble in legroom or headroom. Rear seats are ok for my size. - Cargo room is acceptable. I very recently took a multi-day trip with myself, wife, and two year old son. Dont expect to easily fit everything if camping or hiking, youll want some external storage for that. The bad: - The transmission has a poor set up. First gear ratio is too high and final gear ratio (fifth) is too low. - Tow rating is abysmal at 2,000 lbs. Thats not really enough for anything more than just some farm chores. The awful: - The ride is ok, but easily unsettled by a passing vehicle or by following a 18-wheeler. You must stay extremely alert at higher (65+ mph) highway speeds. - The seat belts lock up much too easily and often stay locked longer than helpful as well. A major nuisance. - The entertainment system is the worst part of the car. The sound quality is very poor. The hands free system is frustrating. The menus are basic AND unintuitive. Occasionally the bluetooth fails to connect completely.
  • Do your research. This is the best AWD available.

I live in the mountains, lots of dirt roads, uneven ground, etc. Surface roads are very steep and twisty. This vehicle handles so well I’m amazed! I’ve owned four 4 wheel drive vehicles and they would spin the tires in tough spots that this car never struggles with. Great mileage also. On top of all that it is an absolute pleasure to drive. Can’t say enough good things.

This is an incredible vehicle. The ground clearance of a Jeep, great gas mileage (the 30/34 mpg rating Subaru advertises is extremely conservative-as a brand new vehicle I am getting 34/40), and Subaru's incredibly competent AWD. The hybrid gives it a bit of a boost off the line to make up for the lackluster acceleration. Very good handling and ride quality. The hybrid also has very little cabin noise. Good sound system on the touring model. All for under $30K for the top of the line model. Yes, there are crossovers which might look better on paper (or the KBB ratings), but none of those vehicles have the Crosstrek's off-road or winter condition prowess.
